Severe Osteoporosis Patients Should not Implant Teeth

Filial sons and daughters joint venture to let the father of the rare age accept artificial tooth planting, and replace beautiful teeth as a birthday celebration. I didn’t expect that the dentist knew that the old man was taking diphosphate because of serious osteoporosis, and he was afraid that the dental operation might cause bone necrosis, so he declined the patient’s request.

“Patients with osteoporosis often have oral health problems. “Osteoporosis patients often have other chronic diseases, and side effects of chronic diseases may affect oral health. If these patients lack too many teeth and can not eat normal food, they can not bite hard food, but can only eat liquid food. They will fall into a vicious circle of osteoporosis and health due to insufficient intake of various nutrients. Therefore, many patients with osteoporosis choose to implant teeth.

However, the doctor cautioned that the dentist should carefully assess whether the patient is suffering from severe osteoporosis and whether bisphosphonates are being administered. Osteoporosis symptoms are mild, calcium supplement, more exercise, not necessarily to take osteoporosis drugs can be improved, no major obstacle to receive dental implants. In the first two years or one or two years of treatment, there is no serious problem in dental implant, but the patients are receiving bisphosphonate drugs, so they are not suitable for dental implant.

This is because healthy bone cells will naturally metabolize, new cells will be generated, and old and waste cells will be absorbed. Due to the abnormal metabolism of bone cells in patients with osteoporosis, the purpose of applying diphosphate drugs is to slow down the metabolism of bone cells. Once the patient’s bone is damaged, it is difficult to heal. As the process of tooth implantation will drill through the bone, if the bone does not heal, it will necrosis, leading to failure of tooth implantation. Patients with severe osteoporosis treated with diphosphate are prone to osteonecrosis if they undergo tooth extraction or any bone related operation, so it is not recommended to accept any dental operation.

The main function of bisphosphonates is to inhibit bone turnover and reduce bone loss. In other words, drugs will cause bone repair function to weaken. The patients who are receiving bisphosphonates to treat osteoporosis can not repair any injury or bone normally, and then they will have necrosis, which is called “bisphosphonates osteonecrosis” clinically. In this case, the implant fails to integrate with the bone, which is called “failure before bone integration”.

Therefore, I here remind us that the treatment of missing teeth should be carried out early. If you find any osteoporosis, don’t panic. If you can accept the dental operation after the assessment of the doctor, you still have the opportunity to enjoy the artificial tooth planting and get a good tooth. However, if the patients have been taking oral osteoporosis drugs for more than five years or have been treated with bisphosphonate drugs, they should be evaluated carefully before dental implantation, and they must choose a regular hospital.
