Dental Emergency Red Light – When should I Go to Dental Emergency?

If the holiday is very long, tooth trauma, toothache, swollen face, bleeding, filling things collapsed, and some dental problems suddenly occur, do you need to go to the dental emergency department? And what are the situations that need to be recommended for dental emergency?

It can be considered from the following three aspects:

  1. Dental emergency is “your urgent, is it urgent? Or is dental disease really urgent? “
  2. Dental emergency, red, yellow and green?
  3. How to prevent?

Emergency system, the most important is the classification of examination and injury, that is to use emergency resources for patients who are really life-threatening. And dental related problems, even to the emergency room, according to the professional classification of emergency injuries, most of them only need to use emergency resources. The correct concept of dental emergency is as follows.

  1. Dental emergency is definitely not that you don’t have time to go or don’t want to ask for leave to make an appointment with the dental hospital, or you can’t sleep at night, catch a flight tomorrow, live abroad, assume to return to China to deal with teeth quickly, but don’t want to wait for the general appointment time, etc., before you think of going to the dental emergency and abusing the emergency resources.
  2. Dental emergency treatment is not “treatment” of teeth, but emergency treatment. Always remember that after emergency treatment, you must make an appointment with a professional stomatologist to complete the follow-up identification, diagnosis and treatment.
  3. The best way to prevent it is to check it regularly. Do not hold the attitude that you don’t need to look at your teeth if you don’t feel uncomfortable, but wait until your teeth are in good condition to complain about the difficulty of appointment and the long time of appointment. In addition, if you do good oral cleaning, you are responsible for yourself.

About 1% of the patients, this kind of patients really need to go to the emergency room where the dentist is on duty immediately for evaluation and treatment. However, before you go to the emergency department, you can make your own preliminary treatment at home.

(1) Permanent teeth fall off

The stability of vital signs is always the first priority, followed by the three principles of fast, release and return.

“Fast”: golden time 30-60 minutes; quickly find out the teeth and quickly put them back into the fallen alveolar bone.

The permanent teeth can be put back, but the hand can only grasp the crown part without touching the root.

The primary teeth shall not be put back; even if the primary teeth are found, they shall not be put back into the mouth.

“Put”: if the teeth cannot be put back immediately after falling off due to various reasons, including looking for the teeth falling off or the surface of the teeth falling off is dirty, it is recommended to store the teeth falling off in ice milk, physiological salt water and seek medical advice as soon as possible.

It has also been suggested that the lost permanent teeth can be placed in the mouth, but attention should be paid to the possibility of swallowing. It is not recommended to pack the teeth in toilet paper or brush the tooth surface by yourself, because it will damage the cells on the tooth surface and cause poor prognosis in the future.

“Back”: after the life signs are stable, the oral related problems shall be handled; and after the holiday, the doctor shall be called as soon as possible.

(2) Facial trauma and fracture

All traumas must ensure the stability of life signs before dealing with the problem of teeth.

(3) The face swells up and becomes more and more serious. The swelled area is warm, red, swollen and tender; it swells to the eyes, swallows difficultly, suddenly opens the mouth difficultly, breathes difficultly, with the temperature rising.

This may be due to tooth infection or non tooth source factors, leading to the possibility of acute systemic infection. If the patient has a temporomandibular joint problem and it happens, it needs to be excluded.

Patients themselves need to know whether they have teeth related symptoms recently and what treatments they have taken. Such as inflammation around wisdom teeth, tooth decay, periodontal disease, toothache, facial swelling, gingival abscess, redness and bleeding of tooth flesh or oral related surgery, tooth extraction, etc.

Some oral surgery, extraction, implant, periodontal surgery, apical surgery and so on. In general, it is normal for healthy people to swell up slowly in 2-3 days. Generally, the third and fourth days are the peak periods of the species, and then the swelling will be reduced slowly. The swelling will improve in about 7-10 days.

However, it should be noted that if the swelling is accompanied by swelling to the eyes, swelling to swallowing, dyspnea, temperature rise, hot and red swelling, it may be necessary to go to the emergency department for assessment.

In addition, within 7 days after oral surgery, it is not recommended to take flight, mountaineering, diving, parachuting and other activities.

(4) There’s more blood flow

Emergency evaluation should be considered in case of tooth extraction, oral surgery or oral tumor, although it is ineffective to stop bleeding by self correct gauze biting or pressurization.

Generally speaking, healthy people can stop bleeding after 30-40 minutes with gauze clenching or compression. After taking off the gauze, there will be more or less saliva and slightly seeping blood from the wound. This big date lasts for 2-3 days. At this time, try not to spit because of nausea, nor drink water with a straw. Try to swallow the saliva mixed with blood.

Note that when some patients bite gauze or pressurize again, they doze or fall asleep. They think there is pressure to stop bleeding, but they don’t do it correctly. Please do it again.

Do not deliberately peel off the blood clots of the wound because of nausea; do not use a straw to drink water or drink, because the negative pressure in the mouth will peel off the clots on the wound, and it is easy to continue to flow bright red blood.

If the above-mentioned hemostasis principle is achieved, and the bright red blood is continuously emerging from the wound or the mouth is filled with “pig blood” similar to the pig blood soup we drink from time to time, it is recommended to go to the emergency department immediately.

(5) Oral problems can affect the progression of systemic diseases, such as very serious diabetes.
